Who we are

HereWeGrow is a non-profit, funding organization based in Hamburg, Germany, dedicated to enhancing the livelihoods of smallholder coffee farmers and their families. To this end, we support projects in Ethiopia and Uganda as well as internationally at sector level. We are committed to finding the most effective support services for our target group and constantly test, evaluate and improve existing approaches. By actively sharing lessons learned with the sector, we aim at widening our impact beyond our scope of work.

We are a small team of motivated and impact driven experts, guided by clear set of values. To strengthen our team in Hamburg, we are looking for a team-oriented Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning (MEL) Manager (f/m/d) for 30-40 hours/week.

Area of responsibility

As a MEL Manager (f/m/d) at HereWeGrow (HWG), you ensure that our funded programs are effectively monitored, evaluated, and that learning is systematically incorporated into our work. Your role will be instrumental in creating insights and evidence-based recommendations to enhance the effectiveness of funded initiatives, inform our learning agenda and guide our portfolio decisions.

You will report to the Head of Operations and work in close collaboration with our MEL and project management team.

Monitoring and evaluation within the entire project cycle:

  • Selection and coordination of our MEL partners.
  • Co-development of evaluation designs in coordination with research and project implementing partners.
  • Quality control of evaluation concepts and tools (qualitative and quantitative).
  • Facilitation of monitoring data exchange between project implementer and HWG.
  • Analysis of monitoring data to inform our project team on progress and optimization potential.
  • Close collaboration with project teams to integrate MEL findings and existing evidence into programmatic decision-making.

Organizational learning and impact assessment:

  • Evaluation of overall project impact based on existing M&E data, including creation of impact models and social return on investment calculations to inform project management and funding decisions.
  • Coordination of HWG-own research projects and data collection through HWG field staff or service providers as well as conduction of cross-project data analyses to answer specific learning questions.
  • Continuous identification of opportunities for process improvement and innovation within the MEL area.

Other: Handling of overarching administrative tasks, e.g., literature management.

Who we are looking for

  • Academic degree in social sciences, development or agricultural economics or similar.
  • At least 3 years of professional experience in research or monitoring, evaluation and learning within the context of development cooperation; experience in rural development, coffee or East Africa is an advantage.
  • Expertise in the design and implementation of impact evaluations, data analysis and statistical software (e.g., R, Stata).
  • Optionally, you have experience in (some) of the following areas:
    • Data transformation tools (e.g., FME Workbench)
    • Geoinformation systems (e.g., ArcGIS)
    • Project management
    • Workshop facilitation and stakeholder engagement
  • English: fluent; German: basic knowledge.
  • You have strong problem-solving skills and enjoy working both independently and in a team on complex tasks. You are open and flexible in dealing with unexpected challenges and strive for high quality.
  • You feel comfortable in communicating appropriately with internal and external stakeholders in an international context.
  • You are curious, like to ask questions and learn constantly.

What we offer

  • An opportunity to make a meaningful impact and generate valuable learnings.
  • Permanent contract with 30-40 hours a week.
  • The possibility to work mobile up to two days per week.
  • Modern office space located in Hamburg's historic harbor area.
  • Several trips per year to our project countries in Eastern Africa.
  • Short communication channels in a motivated team.
  • Joint regular trainings and an individual training contingent.
  • Competitive compensation.
